National Treasure: Minerals, Rocks and the Mining Industry
MK4B group 1 had a successful seminar entitled, “National Treasure: Minerals, Rocks and the Mining Industry last July 18, 2012 (Wednesday) at St. Thomas Hall, Colegio de San Juan de Letran. All the organizers were well prepared and coordinated in the event. The audience also actively participated in the activity and this was greatly appreciated by the group.
The seminar started with an inspirational remark from our area chair Asst. Prof. Raem Mendoza. The guest speaker was Dr. Dahlia C. Apodaca, a topnotcher in Chemists Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission and is currently a Senior Science Research Specialist in Department of Environment and Natural Resources Mines and Geosciences Bureau. The event focused on how minerals and rocks are formed and used in different fields. She also explained the guidelines and procedures taken before the government allows mining companies to operate. Dr. Apodaca shared her knowledge of the industry, citing the advantages and disadvantages of mining in the Philippines. She also presented the places where different minerals and rocks could be mined in the country and lastly. She ended her talk with a quotable remark: “In every actions and decisions that we make, there is a corresponding consequence to it”. After her speech, we had an open forum where the questions that students actively asked were answered sincerely.
The organizers and attendees learned more about the environment and how we could protect and preserve it in our own little way. The seminar enlightened our minds about the present situation of the mining industry in the Philippines. Moreover, the organizers are grateful about the success of the event, and so we would like to thank our dean Dr. Cristina M. Castro-Cabral, our area chair Asst. Prof Raem Mendoza, and our dear professor Dr. Evangelina Laurel for their invaluable support throughout the seminar.
